About Us

Who We Are:

Phoenix Employment Ministry is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping the sheltered homeless and others whose incomes are below the poverty level find and keep satisfying work. In 2002, the Reverend Don Skinner recognized the need for an organization dedicated solely to helping those most in need of employment. With the assistance of a talented and committed Board of Directors, team of volunteers, and staff PEM has placed over 500 people in jobs. PEM is funded by contributions and grants and does not charge clients or employers for its services.

Our Vision: To be the ministry through which all of Wilmington’s sheltered and and nearly homeless will find satisfying, long term employment that will allow them to be self-sufficient.

Our Mission : To empower sheltered and nearly homeless people by helping them to find and keep satisfying, long term employment.

What Makes Us Unique:

First, PEM is the only organization in Wilmington dedicated solely to helping the sheltered homeless and nearly homeless find employment.

Second, because job-hunters are required to be at PEM daily from 8:30am to 3:00pm, staff and volunteers have the opportunity to build relationships and create community with participants. Consequently, much more is learned about them and their situations than would otherwise be possible. PEM has become a savvy resource center for needs that, while not directly related to the job, have an impact on one’s employability and employment sustainability.

Third, PEM understands its calling to be a ministry. It is God centered and spiritually based. This makes its dependence on the generosity of individuals, religious institutions, foundations, and businesses all the more critical. PEM does not discriminate based on religion. All are welcome and all will receive equal attention.
